The Miami
The Miami lived in the Middle Eastern part of the United States (look in the green section on the map below to find them). French missionaries were the first people to encounter the Miami tribes and set up a trading post with them in Indiana. This meant that the Miami were allies of the French in the Seven Years war (sometimes called the French and Indian war) between the French and the British. They often fought with the Iroquois over land and against European settlement. In 1830, some of the Miami were included in the Indian Removal Act and were forced to move west, but a small group was allowed to stay in Indiana.
Lifestyle
The men and women of the Miami tribes had different jobs and roles. The men were hunters and warriors. The women were in charge of cooking, farming, and childcare. Only men could be chiefs but women could oversee religious festivals and ceremony's. Both men and women could tell stories, make artwork, and practice medicine. They lived in houses made of woven reeds and had a wooden council lodge.
The Miami men wore breechcloths and women wore skirts and leggings. Both men and women wore leather moccasins. The Miami wore beaded headbands, which sometimes had a few feathers in them. Both men and women painted their faces for certain occasions and tattooed themselves.
The Miami people did lived near large sources of water so they used canoes to travel sometimes. They also used dogs as pack animals. The dogs could carry packs or pull sleds.
Miami women grew corn, squash, and beans. They cooked cornbread, soup, and stews. The men used controlled fires to hunt buffalo and other animals.
