Nez Perce
The Nez Perce was an indigenous tribe located in the Plains and Rocky Mountain regions of present-day United States. Once horses were introduced to North America, the Nez Perce became proficient riders almost immediately. In fact, they had the largest herd of horses in the continent at one point.
The Nez Perce had no guns or firearms, which made them vulnerable to other tribes and settlers who had access to them. Groups like the Corps of Discovery would take advantage of Nez Perce hunting trails to find buffalo to hunt.

In late September, 1805, a few members of the Corps of Discovery were found approaching the camp of one of the Nez Perce tribes. Among them was Captain William Clark. Clark and the other members offered ribbons to some nearby Nez Perce boys who had been watching the men. The offering of the ribbons signified that the strangers were friendly.
The chief of the tribe, Twisted Hair, met in conference with Clark as well as Meriwether Lewis, who had brought the rest of the Corps. However, neither Clark and Lewis nor Twisted Hair were able to communicate each other, resulting in an exchanging of gifts rather than words.
Even after this exchange, the men in the Corps of Discovery stayed with the Nez Perce for several days. The Corps was planning on making an expedition to map out the West. It was then arranged for the Nez Perce to supply them with provisions and supplies, while the Corps left their horses to the tribe. When their expedition was over, the Corps returned to the tribe to retrieve their horses. However, the Corps ended up staying longer than anticipated, waiting for the snow to melt so that they could have an easier journey back. During this time, the Nez Perce supplied the Corps with food, while Clark treated their sick and wounded in return.
